Dimps has cranked out the 3rd and simply, best installment of Dragon Ball Z
Budokai, and it sure takes the cake. Most of the modes are completely revamped
including the story mode, Dragon Universe, which adds adventure as well as the
Dragon Ball Z plot line and of course the battles. I, for one, have seriously
enjoyed this game and I hope that you will too along with this guide to aid you
throughout your journey in completing the game.

\ ADVANCED CONTROLS /
-------------------

Advanced Kick/Punch - If you press the left or right directional buttons toward
or away from your opponent while pressing Punch or Kick
you will unleash a new, more powerful attack. Also works
in combinations.

Gather Ki - Press and hold Guard and double-tap and hold the left or right
directional button to generate Ki. You also generate Ki by landing
attacks on your opponent.

Deflect/Return - If you press Guard right before you are hit by a Ki Blast Wave
you can deflect it aside. If you time it just right you can
it back at your opponent.

Sidestep - Tap Guard plus the Up or Down directional button to move in a circle
around your opponent. Helps for avoiding ring outs.

Dodging - Tap Guard at the exact moment an attacker is going to land a physical
attack and you will dodge the attack at the cost of one half a Ki bar.

Roll - If you are knocked back, tap Guard at the exact moment you hit the ground
for a quicker recovery. This move can also prevent ring outs.

Teleport - Press the left or right directional button (toward the opponent) and
the Guard to instantly teleport behind him.

Pursue - Press the Energy button as soon as you send your opponent flying back
to follow them into the air and deliver an extra hit.

Dash - Double and hold the left or right direction button to dash with increased
speed.

Transform - You can increase your strength by pressing Punch, Kick, and Guard
simultaneously if you have met the conditions.

Grapple - Press Punch and Guard simultaneously to perform a special grapple move

Charge Attack - Dash at your opponent and Punch to break through an enemies
defenses.

Guard Crash - Press Kick and Punch simultaneously to unleash a powerful punch
to break through an enemies defenses. Press Kick and Guard
simultaneously to perform an unblockable kick.

Use Item - If an item is equipped on a custom character, hold Guard and
double-tap down to use the item.

Taunt - If no item is equipped, a taunt will be perform that causes the opponent
to lose 1 Ki gauge bar.

\ SPECIAL ATTACKS /
-----------------

Hyper Mode - Press Triangle, Square, Circle, and X (or L2) simultaneously to
enter Hyper Mode. While in this powerful mode, your character will
glow red and deal extra damage and not be phased by normal attacks,
but will slowly have Ki drained and it cannot be charged during
this time. Once all the energy has been drained, the character is
momentarily weakened, spin the Left or Right Analog stick to regain
strength as quickly as possible. You must be in Hyper Mode to
perform a Dragon Rush or Ultimate Attack.

Dragon Rush - While in Hyper Mode you can initiate a Dragon Rush. To do this,
press the Energy button (Circle) as soon as you knock your
opponent back. The Dragon Rush attacks plays out in three phases
and the defender gets a chance to block each phase. When you see
the graphic across the bottom of the screen, select one of the
buttons. If the defender chooses the same button, then some of the
damage may be avoided or diminished.

Ultimate Attack - While in Hyper Mode you may perform a devastating Ultimate
Attack. The level of fatigue of your opponent also has an
effect of how difficult it will be to initiate the attack but
a full fatigue is not required. Simultaneously pressing Circle
Triangle, Square, and X (or L2) will unleash the attack seeing
that you have the required amount of Ki (you must hit your
opponent to start the attack). A graphic then appears at the
bottom of the screen in which each character tries to get the
bar as high as possible before pressing X, the highest bar
after three rounds wins. If attack wins, the attack does it's
full damage -- if the defense wins then the damage is reduced.

Beam Struggles - If you and your opponent fire a large Ki blast attack at the
same time, the beams will meet in the middle. You must then
rotate the left analog stick or the right analog stick or push
any buttons as quickly possible. Whoever is the slowest will
get blasted.

\ Dragon Universe /
+----------------------------------------------------------------------------+

Select a character and fly around the universe seeking the Dragon Balls. As
your journey unfolds, you will travel around to distant planets, unlock skills,
encounter fierce warriors, and gain incredible strength. You can choose between
six warriors at the beginning and up to eleven by unlocking others.

Story Events will be marked on the map with a red dot, land there to begin
the event. There are also points of interest not marked, including money, other
mini events, capsules, the Dragon Radar, and the illustrious Dragon Balls. If
you win a battle, you will earn experience points and eventually level up. You
can spend any of the accumulated Z-points on the following stats:

Health - Increases the number of bars of health your fighter has

Ki - Reduces the amount of Ki it takes for your character to use special attacks

Attack - Improves the damage that physical attacks do

Guard - Lessens the damage that attacks do

Arts - Increases the amount of damage special attacks do

Ability - Makes equipped capsules and items more effective

Com - This improves how well the computer controls your character when fighting
against another opponent around the world

Throughout this section anecdotes such as [CXRY] will be marked for coordinate
purposes, where X is equivalent to the column on the map and Y is equivalent to
the row on the map.

Dragon Balls are specific to each Saga, so even though a Ball may be on Earth
in the Android Saga, failing to get it then will not result in the Dragon Ball
appearing in the Buu Saga.

This walkthrough is written on the game's default setting (Easy) and all
statistics are based on that setting (HP, EXP).


S T O R Y R E E N A C T M E N T S

Throughout the course of Dragon Universe you have the chance to initiate
events that happened during the actual show, thus reenacting the story. Doing
so unlocks an original Voice Data that can be played in the Bonus section of
Dragon Universe.

Head to Goku's House [C3R3] to obtain the Kamehameha capsule. From there go
southwest to the Kame House, enter it twice. Going west leads to the World
Tournament Arena, enter to battle Tien for some experience. Head to Kami's
Lookout [C1R2] and enter it twice by using Ki Search (press R1) to allow access.
Goku will get some training and gain 1 level. Make sure the Kamehameha capsule
is equipped and fly over to the red marker on the map to battle Raditz.

After the battle the story progresses and Goku is near Korin's Tower. When
ready, head to the red marker. King Kai gives Goku the Kaioken capsule, equip it
then back to the red marker.

marker where Vegeta awaits.

easier. Be sure to dodge the Galick Guns that Vegeta fires and the fight

Recoome's attacks are slow and slugish, but he dodges alot and doesn't take
as much damage as enemies you've been fighting. To counter this, use special
attacks like Kamehameha to keep him at bay.

After that battle head to the Namekian Village [C3R2]. Goku will meet up with
Nail and gain a level. Go to Guru's House [C1R1] to gain yet another level. At
the next red marker Recoome mentions his superior, Captain Ginyu. Head to the
next mark to battle with Captain Ginyu.

Captain Ginyu has both close and long-range attacks, so be on guard for the
entirety of the battle so the attacks can be easily dodged or teleported
against. Make absolutely sure you dodge Body Change, it swaps HP and movelists
with Captain Ginyu. Body Change will only be used during the last 1.5 bars that
Ginyu has or if you have more than 2 bars then he does.

After the battle Goku is wounded but is recovering in a machine. When you
regain control of Goku, head to the red marker to meet Frieza.

Death Beam is a fast long-range attack and really the only special that needs
to be worried about other than the Ultimate Move: Death Ball, but that is
easily avoided if you resist fatigue. Frieza is fast and small, so kicks work
better than punches in this battle.

Take this time to gain a quick level at the battle point [C1R2] since the
Saibamen here yield 1625 EXP a kill. When you feel comfortable enough to take
Frieza on head to the red marker. Krillin will be killed and Goku receives the
Super Saiyan Capsule.

also available regardless if you have it equipped or not.

levels. Then be sure to grab the Warp Kamehameha Capsule, located northeast of
the Cell Games Ring. Head to the red dot, Cell Games Ring, to battle it out with
Cell.

Spirit Bomb

A good tactic for this battle is to let Cell exhaust his energy then knock him
down to his original form. Watch out for the Energy Field attack, it's hard to
dodge and it's close range so just be wary when starting combos. Spirit Bomb
hurts quite a bit but it should be easy to dodge when you see Cell enter Hyper
Mode.
